Some nights, my thoughts arrive before sleep does.
The house is quiet, but my mind isn’t.
I replay conversations I can’t change. I imagine situations that haven’t happened. I search for answers to questions that don’t yet have one.
From the outside, everything looks still.
Inside, it feels like my thoughts are running in circles.
For a long time, I thought if I could just think a little harder, I’d eventually find peace.
Instead, I usually found more questions.
I’ve slowly realised that overthinking isn’t always my mind trying to solve a problem.
Sometimes it’s my mind trying to protect me.
There’s something strangely comforting about understanding that.
It doesn’t make the anxious thoughts disappear, but it reminds me to treat myself with a little more kindness.
Now, when I notice my thoughts beginning to spiral, I try not to fight them.
Instead, I pause.
I make a cup of tea.
I open a window.
I take a slow breath.
Sometimes I write down what’s worrying me, simply to move it from my mind onto the page.
I’ve noticed that once the thoughts are written down, they don’t seem quite as loud.
Not because the problem has disappeared.
But because I’m no longer carrying it all inside my head.
I’ve also learned that not every thought deserves my attention.
Just because my mind imagines the worst doesn’t mean the worst is waiting for me.
That reminder has become one I return to often.
Some evenings are still difficult.
Some mornings I wake up carrying yesterday’s worries into a brand-new day.
I’m learning not to judge myself for that.
Healing isn’t measured by having perfect days.
Sometimes it’s measured by choosing gentleness instead of self-criticism.
If your mind feels busy today, perhaps you don’t need to solve everything before the sun goes down.
Perhaps today is simply about breathing.
About resting.
About reminding yourself that it’s okay not to have all the answers.
Tomorrow will still be there.
And so will you.
Thank you for spending a few quiet moments here with me.
I hope this little corner of the journal reminds you that even on the busiest days inside your mind, you are worthy of peace, patience, and compassion.
One gentle breath at a time.
